Looks like Microsoft has realized they made a boo boo with Vista and is now strongly focusing on Windows 7.  That's right ladies and gentlemen, another upgrade to the famous Microsoft Windows and yes, you will have to pay for this upgrade as well.

So let's see, Vista lasted about a year, maybe two and already being replaced.  Microsoft is trying to beat Apple's new release of Snow Leopard but as we know, Apple's upgrades are far less expensive and much more successful.

I ran across issues today when I wanted to reload my work provided laptop.  I installed off a bootable DVD (actually two) and the entire install process went without any errors.

Rebooted my laptop and bootmgr not found. Hmmm, thought I might of missed something so I carved another hour of my day and tried again and yet it again failed.

cooldjmac By default Windows XP (home or pro) is limited to 10 connections. If you want to upgrade to 40 you just need to type the following command.

c:inetpubAdminScriptsadsutil set w3svc/MaxConnections 40

cooldjmac Lots of computer users refer to the "Bloodhound Virus" like it is a specific thing - as in "How do I remove the Bloodhound Virus"? While we may know what they mean, what they are asking is technically incorrect.

"In reality, a 'Bloodhound Virus' is spyware"

Bloodhound is a technology that was developed by Symantec. It has the ability to detect various types of viral activity using heuristic algorithms. (techno mumbo jumbo for "symptom search") Think of it like going to the doctor - you may have a symptom like red spots on your back. It could be measles, allergies, or just mosquito bites. The doctor knows its not normal and by asking a few questions can get a better idea of whether or not its serious and how to treat it.

Bloodhound works in much the same way, sniffing around looking for something that isn't quite right. Sometimes what it finds is no big deal, but usually its something harmful and sometimes it is extremely serious for your computer.

The latest nasty spyware compounds the problem by executing certain actions that are virus-like. Bloodhound notices the abnormalities and assumes that the file is harmful (which it is) and identifies it as an unknown virus and the Norton Antivirus program reports it as one of a large list of virus names such as:
Bloodhound.VBS.Worm
Bloodhound.W32
Bloodhound.W32.EP
Bloodhound.W32.1
Bloodhound.W32.2
Bloodhound.W32.3
Bloodhound.WordMacro
Bloodhound.ExcelMacro
Bloodhound.VBS.1 (probable IRC worm)
Bloodhound.VBS.2 (probable IRC worm)
Bloodhound.VBS.3 (probable Outlook worm)
Bloodhound.VBS.4 (probable VBS worm, created with worm generation tool)
Bloodhound.VBS.5 (probable VBS worm, created with worm generation tool)
Bloodhound.JS.1 (probable IRC worm)
Bloodhound.JS.2 (probable IRC worm)
Bloodhound.JS.3 (probable Outlook worm)
Bloodhound.AOLPWS
Bloodhound.Boot
Bloodhound.Boot.String
Bloodhound.DirActCOM
Bloodhound.DirActEXE
Bloodhound.ExcelMacro
Bloodhound.ExcldFile
Bloodhound.FileString
Bloodhound.Hybrid
Bloodhound.HybridCOM
Bloodhound.HybridEXE
Bloodhound.MBR
Bloodhound.NeuralBoot
Bloodhound.NeuralMBR
Bloodhound.Poly
Bloodhound.ResCOM
Bloodhound.ResEXE
Bloodhound.Unknown

To further complicate the issue, Bloodhound.AOLPWS (the first one in the list) is actually a Trojan Horse program (A program that claims to do something useful white it's actually allowing your computer to do nasty things for a hacker). To date there is about 30 different names that this file can be called on your machine. So, in reality a "Bloodhound Virus" is spyware that Norton knows is bad for your computer.

So, how do you remove the Bloodhound Virus? If you are comfortable following instructions that include phrases like...

These Trojans can load from the registry, and they need to be removed from the \Run key:"

"We strongly recommend that you back up the system registry before making any changes. Incorrect changes to the registry could result in permanent data loss or corrupted files. Please make sure you modify only the keys specified."

then you may want to tackle this. Simply do a search and follow the instructions from a trusted source.

If you have no idea what the registry is PLEASE - DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME. You run the risk of doing serious damage to your computer and are dealing with a problem that is way out of your league. Seek professional support to remove problems identified by bloodhound.

cooldjmac "There is no software available that can remove all spyware or malware"

Spyware seems to be the topic of the day. Here are some important facts that you need to know about spyware removal and how to protect yourself.

Fact 1: Spyware and Malware can easily be installed on a system without the user's knowledge. In some cases one infection can propagate many more infections by downloading and installing malicious software stealthily in the background.

Basis: It only takes one piece of software specifically designed to download and install other pieces of software to infect your system, after all, the beauty of a computer is that the only limit is the imagination.

Fact 2: There is no software available that can remove all spyware or malware because of the techniques that are used to release new variants and new strains of infections into the wild.

Basis: In a recent study by PCworld (http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/article/0,aid,119572,00.asp) analysts compared 9 of the top spyware scanning and removal applications against each other. Each application was tested on a system infected with common spyware threats, and then compared against each other to see which product was best at spyware removal and detection. The top three applications detected 65% to 85% of the spyware on the test system, while all the other application detection rates were well below 56%, and as low as 5%. So counting on one piece of software for spyware removal is not a safe bet.

Fact 3: Spyware and malware infections can make pieces of your identity just a few mouse clicks away for criminals because of the ability of the software to gather and report personal information about you.

Basis: http://www.consumer.gov/idtheft/stats.html As if the increase in offline Identity theft in the past year was not enough, Spyware and Malware have helped criminals mine information in the blink of an eye with one single click of a mouse. Online Identity theft and Fraud now leads the way as the method of choice to rip people off. The most upsetting fact of this trend is that while techniques and education are improving to catch and prevent fraud and identity theft, so is the turnaround time for criminals to use the information. Most individuals that discover they have been a victim of stolen personal information realize this well after they have already been victimized. The Identity Theft Resource Center, a nonprofit organization, shares these chilling facts about identity theft: - 13.3 people become victims of identity theft every minute. - It takes an average of 600 hours to fix your credit history after ID theft. - Victims face higher interest rates on all types of loans, increased credit card fees, higher insurance premiums, battles with collection agencies, and difficulties finding a job. - It can take more than 10 years to clean up your credit after ID theft

Fact 4: Spyware and Malware can slow down your internet connection speed dramatically

Basis: Every piece of information that leaves your computer via the Internet has to use some of your bandwidth. A heavily infected system can send a significant amount of information out at any given time. This seriously limits the availability of bandwidth for legitimate uses and the user suffers a dramatic loss of maximum data transfer. In some cases, malware and spyware can turn your computer into a zombie that relays things like spam and viruses which uses even more system and bandwidth resources. Take a look at some of the major companies advertising campaigns and you will see how important it is to them that users prevent their systems from becoming infected. A surge in network traffic for an ISP can cost them MILLIONS of dollars.

Fact 5: Spyware and Malware take away precious system resources in your computer, making boot times longer and over all performance sluggish.

Basis: This topic is self explanatory. You only have so many system resources available in your computer to complete tasks. Every time you add another piece of software (good or bad) that requires attention, you are taking away resources from legitimate computer uses.

Fact 6: A spy Audit survey in 2004 suggests that over 90% of computers are infected with some type of spyware!

Basis: Remember, this is a piece of software that generates these statistics. If you think 90% is a lot, imagine all of the other stuff it is missing! It has been suggested that EVERY online computer has some type of spyware on it. This is particularly true when a computer is used to surf the internet and view websites. The amount of information that can be gathered from cookies alone allow companies to gain valuable information about your surfing habits.

Fact 7: Spyware and Malware can infect your system without your knowledge when you install certain software on your computer. Screen savers, online games, PC performance enhancers and even some spyware removal programs can "bundle" spyware and malware into their software.

Basis: Here is a list of bogus spyware removal applications that actually install more spyware onto your machine: http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.html

Fact 8: Many computer users resort to "reformatting" their computer to rid their system of spyware, resulting in complete data loss and hours of valuable time lost to working on their computers

Basis: Time to reformat a system ranges from 1 to 4 hours depending on the method used. It can take up to several hours to reinstall applications, drivers and updates. There is a high risk of re-infection if not done properly, making the system worse than before. In most cases users lose ALL their data. Of course reformatting your computer will remove spyware, but that does not mean you won’t get infected immediately if you reinstall your favorite free software again.

Fact 9: Some variants of spyware and malware can install backdoors to allow hackers complete control over a system. This often results in someone from the outside using your computer to send out spam and viruses.

Basis: http://spamlinks.net/stats.htm - This is a HUGE resource showing statistics on the amount of spam floating around on the internet. This is why spyware removal is so critical, everyday users are having their systems hijacked and used to create problems.

Fact 10: Businesses and individuals can spend thousands of dollars in a year on tech support, losing hours, days and even sometimes weeks and STILL have the same problems from the start!

Basis: http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,17240,00.asp In this article there are facts like this: "Of 31 total problems posed to 18 stores, 18 were misdiagnosed or left unresolved. That percentage of wrong responses is slightly higher than in our 1998 results."

"I need a new machine because it is running so slow" is what I am hearing from so many people lately and they just don't want to move to Windows Vista and for good reason.

The first issue is that you have to leave your machine because it is running too slow.  More then likely it's packed full of adware, spyware and/or viruses.  No matter what the version of "Windows" you'll have this issue regardless if you have cleaner software on your machine.  It has been proven time and time again that certain software packages will clean certain adware, spyware and viruses while another software package will clean others.  It's just so difficult for software companies to keep up with the multitude of attacks on the unsecure Windows machines.

There has been a considerable amount of discussion recently about the rash of e-mail viruses that have been flying around the Internet. While everyone agrees that viruses are a "Bad Thing," the solution to this problem seems to have escaped many people. The solve for this one is really very simple: Self Control. This document contains simple instructions on how to stop viruses cold.

  • Beware ALL e-mail attachments . An attachment is a part of an e-mail that's not the text. Attachments can be anything; a picture, a word processing document, a program, a video file, or anything that's not just text. Depending on your e-mail program the attachment can show up in different ways but it's usually an icon somewhere on the e-mail.
  • Don't depend on virus scanners to kill viruses attached to emails . Many of the viruses that get disseminated through email do so before the people who maintain the scanner programs can update the program to detect the virus. It's a pretty good bet that you have not updated your virus definition file in a while either. Virus scanners offer very little protection for these kinds of viruses.
  • Look at the attachment name. The first part of the name is unimportant. It's the LAST part after the last dot "." that tells you what kind of file it is. This is called the file's extension. Some people have their computers set to not show extensions for certain files. Windows users should make sure that this option is turned off. The easiest way is to double click on "My Computer" and look in the "View" menu for "Folder Options". If it's not there, look under the "Tools" menu. Once that is opened, look for the "View" tab - in there is a series of checkboxes. Make sure that "Hide File Extensions for Known File Types" is unchecked.

Here's a basic rundown on file types and what danger level they pose to your system. Be careful of filenames that have more than one dot in it: GreatPic.jpg.vbs is a VBS file and is very dangerous.

Microsoft's new Windows Vista operating system is a giant step backward for your freedoms.

Usually, new software enables you to do more with your computer. Vista, though, is designed to restrict what you can do.
